Wotan bids farewell to Brunhildeby Ulf, 2025(after Konrad Dielitz c. late 19th Century)
Depicting a dramatic moment from Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, German artist Konrad Dielitz's late 19th-century masterpiece Wotan Bids Farewell to Brunhilde is a beloved classic in Odinic imagery — but it is one that has barely and rather dimly made it into modern view.
Dielitz's painting, which was probably once held in Berlin, is unfortunately believed to have been destroyed in the Allied bombing of that great German city during the Second World War. Today, only a relatively poor-quality black and white photograph of the (color) original survives, which was first printed, courtesy of the Berlin Photography Company, in an 1896 book titled Character Sketches of Romance, Fiction and the Drama, Volume VIII by Reverend Ebenezer Cobham Brewer. It later appeared in the better-known H.A. Guerber's Myths of the Northmen, published in 1908.
But now, for the first time, Konrad Dielitz's folk masterpiece has finally been brought back to life! Painstakingly and meticulously reworked, and beautifully reimagined in full color, this painting by Ulf truly does justice to the lost great work of Konrad Dielitz.
Available only from Grotti Mill Productions, this large, lush printing of Ulf's work pays homage to the almost forgotten legacy of one of Germany's greatest folk artists.
